About the Area
Macroom (pop. 2,836) is situated inland from Cork on the Sullane River. It's a busy market town set in the middle of some of the best dairying land in Ireland. Weekly cattle and sheep marts are still busy occasions. Macroom Castle, built in Norman times, was once as big as the Tower of London. Today the castle gateway, located just off the main town square, is still an imposing building but the rest of the castle is in ruins. Not far outside the town is an ancient forest called the Gearagh, formed towards the end of the Ice age. Gearagh is an old Irish name for a wooded river and is so called because the forest covers thousands of tiny islands with streams in between. Today it's a protected region and teeming with wildlife.
