Slevoir House built in c.1875, is considered one of Ireland’s outstanding Victorian country houses, in excellent condition, it has a splendid lakeside setting. A five-bay two-storey house, with a distinctive Italianate tower, situated in the beautiful village of Terryglass and overlooks Slevoir Bay, the most north-eastern part of Lough Derg. The campanile tower, which is visible from across the lake and balustraded roof terrace of Slevoir offer wonderful, uninterrupted views over land and lake.
A tree lined avenue leads up passed the courtyard and guest house to the gravelled forecourt and the elegant entrance awaits you to Slevoir House.
The original house at Slevoir was built at the close of the eighteenth century by the Maunsell family. It later passed to a Rev Francis Synge. Lt. Col James F. Hickie purchased Slevoir in 1871 and completely rebuilt the house, giving it the distinctive tower, and the refurbishment was completed in 1875. Designed by John McCurdy – the architect of Dublin’s Shelbourne Hotel. He chose the Italianate style, modelled on Renaissance architecture, which had become popular after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert built their Isle of Wight retreat, Osborne House, in that manner.
HISTORY
Slevoir was the residence of the Hickie family to 1965, when it was sold to the Salesian sisters. They were at Slevoir until 1983, when it passed into private ownership. The current owners purchased in 2013 and have maintained the property to a very high standard.
ACCOMMODATION
The elegant accommodation at Slevoir House is sumptuous, with gracious light filled rooms. The period features are in excellent condition with high ceilings with coving, centre pieces, fireplaces, shutters and original floors.
The entrance hallway is a very impressive focal point of the house, with the original staircase to the first floor and the drawing room and living room leading from it. All of the reception rooms have wonderful views over the lake.
The first reception room is the living room, which is an interconnecting double room running from the front to the back of the house. The double doors can divide this room into two. The room itself is magnificent with coving, high ceilings, fireplace and incredible views over Lough Derg, lawns to the front and the land surrounding the property. Next to the double reception rooms, is the bay windowed drawing room. The drawing room is again a wonderful reception room which is in excellent condition, with coving, high ceilings and a fireplace, benefitting from wonderful views over the lake from the bay windows.
Through a hallway off the entrance hall, the drawing room then leads to the lounge and dining room. The lounge is a comfortable room, again benefitting from high ceilings, coving and a fireplace. The views from the room overlook the lake and grounds. A bar is also within this room, ideal for a pre-dinner aperitif.
The dining room is next door, again with high ceilings, coving and fireplace, overlooking the incredible lake views.
The kitchen is off the dining room and leads to the utility room, storeroom and guest wc’s.
To the front of the property there is a separate access through the lobby, which could be used for guests or for staff purposes and is self-contained, including a sitting room, kitchen and bathroom.

The Italianate tower is a standout feature of Slevoir House and leads from the first floor of the house, over two further levels within the tower and includes a study, and two lounges, which have the most amazing views. LOCATION
Terryglass village is a picturesque village located on the northern shores of Lough Derg and is less than a 10-minute walk from Slevoir House. It is well served with two local pubs, both of which serve delicious local produce. Down at the harbour, located a short walk from the village you will see BBQ & Picnic facilities, a playground and slipway. This is a popular spot for cruisers during the summer months and the slipway allows visitors and locals to enter easily onto Lough Derg with canoes, kayaks, boats etc.
The village has a long history dating back to the mid-6th century when an abbey was founded by Saint Columba, who was one of the twelve apostles of Ireland (pioneers of Christianity throughout Ireland). The famous Book of Leinster which is a Celtic treasure was scribed here by monks in the mid 12thcentury. Shortly after this time the abbey was burnt down by the ever-present Viking raiders. This book is currently housed at Trinity College Dublin. A wall from the abbey is still present in the village.

About the Area
Nenagh (Irish: Aonach Urmhumhan) is a busy commercial town in Tipperary. In 2011 it had a population of 7,995. The town's historic attractions include Nenagh Castle, the Heritage Centre, and the ruined Franciscan abbey. Nenagh is situated on the R445 Regional Road, which links it to the M7. Bus Éireann offer services 24 hours a day to Dublin and Limerick, with JJ Kavanagh offering direct services to both Dublin and Shannon airports. Nenagh railway station is on the Limerick to Ballybrophy line. It is only 37 km from Thurles, which is on the main Dublin/Cork line.
