The Curragh Racecourse is delighted to announce Sherry FitzGerald Country Homes as the new title sponsor of the prestigious Orby Stakes, one of the highlights of the Tattersalls Irish Guineas Festival taking place on 23rd and 24th May.
The partnership brings together two institutions deeply connected to Ireland’s heritage, land and sporting tradition, while celebrating the enduring legacy of one of the most famous horses in Irish racing history.
Run at The Curragh each May, the Orby Stakes commemorates the legendary racehorse owned by Richard “Boss” Croker, the influential Irish-American political figure whose former estate, Glencairn House in south Dublin, is today the official residence of the British Ambassador to Ireland. The Listed content over 12 furlongs carries total prize money of €50,000.
Orby achieved racing immortality in 1907 when he became the first Irish-trained horse to win the Epsom Derby before going on to complete the historic Derby double by winning the Irish Derby.
The historic links between Orby and Glencairn House remain visible today, with memorial headstones to Orby and his dam Rhoda B still located on the grounds of the ambassadorial residence.
Speaking about the announcement, Roseanne De Vere Hunt Director Sherry FitzGerald Country Homes commented, “Sherry FitzGerald Country Homes are delighted to once again partner with The Curragh this year. We are proud to sponsor the Orby Stakes during Tattersalls Irish Guineas Weekend. As always, it promises to be a great weekend of racing.”
Evan Arkwright, Racing and Sponsorship Manager of The Curragh Racecourse, said: “The Orby Stakes celebrates one of the great stories in Irish racing, and we are delighted to continue our long standing relationship with Sherry FitzGerald Country Homes as sponsor of a race so closely associated with heritage, excellence and prestige. The connection between Orby, Glencairn House and Ireland’s rich equestrian tradition makes this partnership particularly special.”
