Stable Lodge
Maulycorcoran
Clonakilty
Co Cork
P85 C958
Description
The House
Stable Lodge derives its name from its closest equine neighbours and is a charming traditional cottage extending to approximately 85.5 sq.m. (920 sq.ft.). Full of character and warmth, the property successfully blends traditional cottage appeal with comfortable modern living. The home benefits from double glazed windows throughout, while the west-facing glass double doors from the kitchen are triple glazed, allowing excellent natural light. Insert stoves fitted in both living rooms create cosy focal points within the home and these are complemented by electric storage heating.
The front door opens into the welcoming main living/dining room at the heart of the house, a bright and inviting space ideal for both everyday family living and entertaining. Warm timber flooring and the feature stove all contribute to the cottage’s cosy atmosphere. The accommodation flows naturally from here into the second living room and the well-laid-out kitchen to the rear of the property. The family bathroom is located just off the kitchen. Upstairs, a central landing leads to two bedrooms,
Grounds
The gardens and grounds are well laid out, offering a sense of privacy and space in a mature countryside setting. The property is approached via a tarmac driveway with ample parking and neatly maintained lawns bordered by established planting and shrubs.
Surrounded by mature trees to both the east and west, the grounds enjoy shelter and a tranquil atmosphere throughout the year. The gardens are thoughtfully arranged with expansive lawn areas, ornamental planting, and a variety of outdoor spaces ideal for relaxing or entertaining.
Additional outdoor features include a steeltech garden shed, a roofed concrete and slated outbuilding, and a detached double garage with direct access onto the public road, providing excellent storage and practical convenience.
Location
Stable Lodge enjoys a peaceful and highly convenient countryside setting in Maulycorcoran, just 5 kilometres west of the vibrant coastal town of Clonakilty and all the amenities it has to offer, including excellent schools, shops, cafés, restaurants, and sporting facilities.
The nearby village of Lisavaird is located approximately 800 metres away and offers a mixed primary school. The surrounding area is renowned for its natural beauty and spectacular coastline, with a number of West Cork’s most popular beaches located within a short drive, including Owenahincha Beach (c. 7 minutes), Long Strand (c. 9 minutes), The Warren Beach (c. 10 minutes), and Red Strand (c. 12 minutes).
History
Stable Lodge borders a quiet country road whose peaceful setting today belies its historic importance. Prior to the construction of the Mail Coach Road (the modern-day N71) circa 1815, this route formed part of the principal highway linking Clonakilty and Rosscarbery.
The property has a long association with the Cusack family, who held more than 91 acres in Maulycorcoran from Lord Freke during the late 18th century. Originally constructed as a single-storey thatched cottage, Stable Lodge is believed to date from the early 1800s and retains much of the charm and character associated with its period origins.
Historical records show the house was occupied by Thomas Cusack in 1849 under a long-standing lease from Lady Carbery. Ownership later passed from the Cusack family by 1885 to Richard Nagle and subsequently to Michael Driscoll, a local dairyman who was resident by 1901. It is believed that the Driscoll family added the first floor extension during the early twentieth century, creating the charming two-storey cottage seen today, and the family remained associated with the property into modern times.
Overall, Stable Lodge offers a rare opportunity to acquire a charming and historic West Cork cottage combining character, privacy, and convenience in an idyllic countryside setting close to Clonakilty and the nearby coastline. With mature gardens, flexible living accommodation, and a rich local heritage, the property is suited as either a permanent residence, holiday home, or peaceful rural retreat.
